Six years ago, I attended my first mom’s retreat at St. Michael’s. This retreat, along with a dad’s retreat, were created for the parents of our confirmation candidates to get a taste of what the freshmen experienced at their first Quest retreat. The kids would experience some amazing moments and would go home to tell their parents about it and some parents wouldn’t be able to relate to their child because they, themselves hadn’t experienced anything like their child did.
Our high school faith formation team has done a fabulous job over the years, to put together a retreat that not only mimics what the students experience, but also opens up the possibilities of our parents grow their relationship with Jesus. More recently, the invitation has been extended to not only parents of candidates, but to ANY men and women would like to deepen their faith.
At one point in the weekend, everyone has the opportunity to write a letter to someone and when Ashley was a freshman, she wrote a letter to Val and me. In it, she shared how the weekend was going and she asked us to attend our corresponding weekends that were coming up. That invitation opened up a whole new world for the two of us.
Before that retreat, I didn’t know much about adoration. Now, I look forward to my hour each week, when I can sit with our Lord and adore Him and bring my prayers to. I didn’t attend weekday masses. Now, I attend two-four extra masses during the week and I can follow the stories in the bible much easier, along with awesome homilies from Fr. Tom. I didn’t pray the rosary at all. Now, Val and I pray a rosary every day together. Before the retreat, I didn’t go to confession on a regular basis. I actually only went a couple of time a year. Now, I receive the sacrament of reconciliation once a month, which makes my life more peaceful.
I’m not listing everything I’m doing for any reason other than to give you an idea of where I came from and where I am now. This retreat, needless to say, made a huge impact on our faith life and I am inviting men and women, parishioner or not, catholic or not, to this retreat. ALL ARE WELCOME! If you are searching for something to kick start, ignite, rejuvenate (or any other adjective you want to fill in the blank with) your faith, this retreat is for you! Give it a try, what have you got to lose? Don’t have time, you say? When is there ever a time in your life when everything falls perfectly into your schedule? If you make it a priority, it will happen. If you want to be able to relate to your spouse or your children, make it a priority. You will not regret making time for this retreat.
