Feast of the Holy Family

Today is the feast of the Holy Family and I want to share the prayer that I pray each day for my family.

Holy Family Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank you for the gift of our family.  Enlighten our hearts and minds that we may live more fully this vocation to love.

In our daily life and work, may we reflect the self-giving love which you, O Father, eternally show with your Son and the Holy Spirit.

Let your love be evident in the peace that reigns in our home and in the faith we profess and live.  May our family always be a place of generosity, understanding, forgiveness and joy.

Kindly give us the wisdom and courage to be witnesses to your eternal design for the family, and grant that the Holy Family of Nazareth may always guide our path to holiness as a family.

We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God forever and ever. Amen.

The Holy Family was just like your family and mine.  They had problems, disagreements, and difficult days, just like modern day families do.   Mary became pregnant as a young girl, Joseph was wanting to divorce her, and they were both forced to leave their home. They also had laughter and joy.  At least, I believe they did.

When I pray this prayer, I am praying for our family to be holy.  God loves each of our families and He wants us to strive to be holy families.  When I pray these words, I think of different situations that our family has been in and I believe that, by praying these words, our family has been equipped at certain times to use those opportunities to glorify God and His goodness.

Fr. Tom offered an invitation today at mass.  Are there family issues that we can leave in 2015 as we enter a new year?  Forgiveness goes a long way in restoring family unity.  I have learned over the years that when we forgive others, it frees us to be at peace with ourselves and God.

So, I would like to add onto Father’s invitation and offer to you the opportunity to start off the new year with a clean heart and a forgiving heart.  May your 2016 be abundantly blessed and may your eyes be open to seeing that your family is a true gift from God.
